How We Survived Our First Summer As New Parents

It is our first summer as new parents where both Axel and I did not plan to travel. It was also a different kind of experience for both of us since we met each other.

We noticed that a few things changed such as our priorities, how we manage our time, among other things. Our decisions were based on the baby schedule. For instance, we planned our drives during Leo’s naps. This way, we were sure that we would not have a fussy baby in the car, and by the time he was awake, we already arrived at our destination, or it was time for a break.

Sleep, especially for me, is no longer a luxury. But I am surprised how much I could and still can get done with only less than 5 hours of sleep. Once in a while, naps were unavoidable to freshen up and also try to avoid being grumpy, which could affect everyone’s mood.

Axel and I are random people, meaning that we can abruptly decide to do something without even having to plan it. We have always been flexible with our time and plans. There were times when our randomness and flexibility would fit perfectly well with Leo’s schedule, but on other occasions, it was stressful and chaotic.

Instead of being super stressed with a million plans, we tried to take it one day at a time, to avoid pressure between us. Our plans were short, realistic and doable because by all means, and as new parents, we are trying to avoid postpartum depression.

Overall, our first summer as new parents was cozy. We do feel we could have done a few things differently, like perhaps taking more trips. We also think that we are more prepared for next summer, as we want to plan a trip in time.

I hope you had a lovely summer surrounded by the people you love most. Thank you for reading and talk to you super soon, again!
